Tsavo East National Park is Kenya’s largest national park, covering about 13,747 km² of semi-arid wilderness in Taita-Taveta County, established in 1948. It is renowned for its iconic “red elephants,” which get their distinctive rust color from bathing in the park’s iron-rich soil, as well as its maneless lions and the legendary man-eaters of Tsavo. The park is bisected by the Galana River and features landmarks such as the Yatta Plateau (the world’s longest lava flow), Lugard Falls, and the Aruba Dam, hosting over 500 bird species and diverse wildlife including lions, leopards, buffalo, and the rare hirola antelope.
