Watamu is a coastal town in Kilifi County, southeastern Kenya, located north of Mombasa and south of Malindi. It is renowned for its white sandy beaches, coral gardens, and the Watamu Marine National Park and Reserve, one of Kenya’s oldest marine protected areas. The area forms part of the Malindi-Watamu-Arabuko-Sokoke UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and hosts Kenya’s Marine Big Five: sea turtles, whale sharks, dolphins, whales, and billfish. The adjacent Mida Creek features extensive mangrove forests hosting most of Africa’s mangrove species, and is a vital stopover for migratory birds along the Asian-East African Flyway.
